Payment & Fees

Therapy is an investment in you, your relationships, and your communities.

That said, the amount that qualifies as an investment can vary widely from person to person.

To accommodate a variety of circumstances, I offer sliding scale pricing.

I invite you to consider what amount would feel like a sustainable investment to you — one that you notice, but not one that feels like a hardship.

I operate on an honor system and trust you to determine which fee range is appropriate for you.

My Sliding Scale Options

Below Market Rate* ($100-$190)

This rate is for people making ends meet. If you are supporting loved ones, carrying personal/ family debt, or if you come from communities that have been excluded from a fair wage or access to building wealth, this could be the rate for you.

Market Rate
($200)

This rate reflects the actual current cost of my work based on my experience, training, and my needs as a human. This may be the rate for you if you are financially stable and/or if neither the below nor above market rates are appropriate.

Above Market Rate ($210-$300)

This might also be called the “Pay-It-Forward” or “Redistribution” rate. If you make $125k or more per year, have access to inherited wealth, and/or are otherwise in a state of financial abundance, I invite you to pay this rate, which allows me to sustain a wider sliding scale.

*If this rate is still prohibitive for you, please see my resources page for some low-cost referral options.

Some Financial FAQ’s

  • I’m not currently in-network with any insurance plans. You can read a little bit about that in my FAQ section. However, I do accept out-of-network insurance benefits, which many plans offer. To find out about yours, you can use my handy out-of-network-benefits calculator. Just use my NPI number: 1396229845.

  • If you’d like to find out if your insurance offers out-of-network benefits to cover our sessions, you can use my handy-dandy calculator tool! Just use my NPI number: 1396229845.

You should also call your insurance company directly and ask them these questions for more specifics:

    • How much does my plan cover for an out-of-network provider?

    • What are my out-of-network mental health benefits?

    • What is my deductible and has it been met?

    • How many sessions per calendar year does my plan cover?

    • Is a referral required from my primary care physician to see a therapist?

  • Challenging capitalism is one of my values, both as a person and as a therapist. As a business owner, this means I need to figure out how to participate in commerce without acting like a capitalist. I base my fee on my and my family’s current financial needs and goals. Some of these are:

    • To care for my home

    • To participate in my community in intentional & meaningful ways

    • To raise children

    • To travel

    • To prepare for ongoing climate crisis

    • To prepare for retirement and long term care

    • To care for my long-term health

    • To make regular wealth re-distribution and reparations to Black & Indigenous people part of my business model

  • As private corporations under capitalism, insurance companies ultimately desire to maximize profit and minimize expenses. This is the main factor informing their decisions. In order for insurance companies to agree to pay for services, they require a diagnosis from the DSM-V be assigned to you and frequently mandate which diagnoses receive treatment and which do not.

This often involves insurance representatives, most with little to no clinical mental health training, making decisions about how many sessions should be adequate to address your concerns, what length of session should suffice, and what approaches can be used. They may also seek access to your information while in therapy.

As a therapist who utilizes somatic and expressive approaches beyond what insurance companies deem “evidence-based treatment,” and who seeks to approach people’s experiences beyond the colonial medical model, insurance companies and I don’t really speak the same language.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, more and more insurance companies are now rolling back coverage for virtual services, be it denying coverage or reducing payment rates to providers for virtual services.

If I were to take insurance, then our therapy would be directly overseen by each insurance company and they would play a role in decisions involved in your care. By my practice remaining out of network, I can maintain a high level of quality care as well as your privacy and autonomy.

  • I give a portion of my income each year to local and national frontline organizations such as the Boston Trans Emergency Fund, National Queer & Trans Therapists of Color Network, and the Haymarket People’s Fund. As a settler on this land, I pay land tax to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag.

  • Thank you to the following people and organizations for providing and/or inspiring the language and structure of my sliding scale: Alexis J. Cunningfolk of Warts + Cunning Apothecary, Dr. Jennifer Mullan of Decolonizing Therapy, and The Inclusive Therapists Network.
